What We Do

Friends of Sonoita Creek (FOSC) was founded in 2004.  Its mission addresses the 270 square mile Sonoita Creek watershed.

We support the Hummingbird Monitoring Network, the Borderlands Habitat Restoration Initiative, provide displays at local events, present informational programs, guide hikes and bird walks, and bring experts together with residents and visitors.

Friends members observe erosion control and habitat restoration in Sonora, Mexico.

Slide show (above) of members visit to the Austin Ranches in Sonora, Mexico.  Valer Austin has built thousands of gabions (wire baskets filled with rock) to slow the flow of surface water and allow recharge of the aquifer.  Riparian habitat has been restored in spite of years of drought.  Thanks to Valer Austin and Ron Pulliam of the Borderlands Habitat Restoration Intiative.

Friends and Arizona State Parks:   Friends contributed to the development and operation of the “Healthy Water Education Program,” a classroom curriculum, journal, and field trip for elementary students at Patagonia Lake State Park/Sonoita Creek State Natural Area.  In 2008 staff was reduced throughout State Parks and the program was discontinued.  (FOSC supports State Parks’ mission, but is not affiliated with State Parks.)

Many FOSC members volunteer for State Parks mid-Oct. through mid-April.  They operate the Visitor Center at Patagonia Lake State Park and maintain trails.
