What We Do

Friends of Sonoita Creek (FOSC) was founded in 2004.  Its mission addresses the 270 square mile Sonoita Creek watershed.

We support the Hummingbird Monitoring Network, the Borderlands Habitat Restoration Initiative, provide displays at local events, present informational programs, guide hikes and bird walks, and bring experts together with residents and visitors.

Friends and Arizona State Parks:  In 2007, Sonoita Creek State Natural Area was staffed by rangers who monitored resources, developed trails, and reached out to the public with educational and interpretive activities.  Friends contributed expertise, materials, and volunteers to the development and operation of the “Healthy Water Education Program,”a classroom curriculum, journal, and field trip for elementary students.

Since ASP funding and staff was cut in 2008, all work has stopped in the 10,000 acres along Sonoita Creek from Patagonia Lake to Rio Rico.  Without Parks staff and Patagonia Lake State Park facilities, the water education program could not survive.  We hope to restart it with other means.  (FOSC supports State Parks mission, but is not affiliated with State Parks.)

Many FOSC members volunteer for State Parks mid-Oct. through mid-April.  They operate the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area Visitor Center on weekends and maintain trails.  Arizona State Park – Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, description, events, and maps.
